1. Amount of Calories. Start eating the right amount of calories. The number of calories you eat is a huge factor in whether you'll gain, lose or maintain your weight. Your body uses a set number of calories each day to stay alive, move around and exercise. If you eat more than that set number, you'll gain weight if you eat less, you'll lose weight and if you eat exactly what your body needs, your weight will stay the same. You can use the calorie calculator for an estimate of how much energy your body needs.

2. Types of Fat. Fats aren't always bad. They can be split up into three categories: unsaturated, saturated and trans fat. Unsaturated fats are the healthy kind and are found in fruits/vegetables(in small amounts), oils, nuts and fish. Saturated fats are the unhealthy kind and are mostly found in animal products such as meat, milk, cheese and eggs. Trans fat is also unhealthy and found in any food containing partially or fully hydrogenated oils (check the nutrition label).
3. Types of Carbohydrates. Like fats, carbs can also be split into healthy and unhealthy categories. Simple carbs are sugars found in soda, juices, doughnuts, candy and other sweets. You should minimize your intake of these carbs. Complex or healthy carbs are found in fruits, vegetables and 100% whole wheat flour. While simple carbs are digested quickly and leave you hungry shortly after eating them, complex carbs will leave you full for a longer period of time helping you control your calorie intake.
4.More Fiber. On average, Americans don't get enough fiber in their diets. Fiber has many health benefits including weight/appetite control, reducing the risk of certain cancers and lowering cholesterol levels. Foods high in fiber include fruits, vegetables, 100% whole wheat flours, brown rice and beans.
5. Enjoy Eating. Don't forget to enjoy the food you eat. Sometimes going on a healthy diet means reducing your intake of the foods you love. The only way a diet can work in the long run is if you enjoy the food you're eating. If you get rid of every single unhealthy but tasty food, you won't last very long. Moderation is the key to enjoying some unhealthy foods. Having a few pieces of chocolate, a hamburger or a cup of soda won't kill you as long as the rest of your diet is OK. Go ahead and eat some junk, just don't let that junk take control of your diet.
